N.L. oil project West White Rose is back in bloom
In a striking turnaround from near abandonment, Newfoundland and Labrador’s West White Rose oil project is flourishing again, now 83% complete at the Port of Argentia. Spearheaded by Cenovus Energy with partners including Suncor Energy and Newfoundland and Labrador’s own OilCo, the project employs nearly 1,000 workers on a massive concrete gravity structure destined to serve as the region’s first offshore wellhead platform. Engineer Mike Rudofsky, overseeing the project, shared the project’s progress and the local workforce’s pivotal role. With the structure set to be floated to the White Rose oil field and begin oil production in 2026, this revitalization not only secures future oil supply but also represents a significant local economic boost, reflecting a deep-seated resilience and community pride in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and market instabilities.
