Irving Oil’s “Operation Ram” represents a $190-million investment and an additional 2,300 skilled workers at Saint John Refinery
On September 17, 2023, Irving Oil commenced a significant maintenance initiative, known as “Operation Ram”, at its Saint John refinery. The project represented a $190 million investment aimed at enhancing the facility’s safety, sustainability, and reliability. This major turnaround, one of the largest private capital investments in Atlantic Canada, lasted 7 weeks and employed 2,300 skilled workers, primarily sourced from New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada. According to Kevin Scott, Irving Oil’s Chief Refining and Supply Officer, the project involved 19 different skilled trades and 77 different companies, 50 of which are based in New Brunswick. He noted the influx of workers was estimated to generate $8 million for the local economy.
