Miawpukek Chief Advocates for Increased Atlantic LNG exports

Chief Mi’sel Joe of the Miawpukek First Nation is pushing for the export of LNG from Newfoundland and Labrador to Europe, challenging Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s skepticism about the viability of such exports from Canada’s East Coast. While Trudeau favors routing natural gas through the U.S. for liquefaction, Chief Joe plans direct negotiations with Germany to secure an independent export path, highlighting the nation’s readiness to utilize their 5% stake in LNG Newfoundland and Labrador Ltd. The company proposes a $5.5-billion facility in Arnold’s Cove, intended to be the world’s lowest-emission liquefaction plant, powered by renewable energy. Despite the promising project, funding remains a primary obstacle. Chief Joe, a recognized leader with the Order of Canada, emphasizes the strength in unity across First Nations as they navigate this and other ambitious projects.
