Repsol SA moves closer to providing LNG to Europe from Atlantic Canada

Repsol SA has moved forward in its efforts to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Canada’s east coast to Europe, securing a six-year extension on its export license from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). This extension allows Repsol’s Saint John LNG Development Co. (SJLNG) until May 2032 to begin exports from a proposed overhaul of its New Brunswick import terminal.

The project’s main challenge lies in securing a stable supply of feed gas, as the Canadian pipeline network does not currently extend to the Atlantic seaboard. This would require relying on gas supplies from the eastern United States. The future of the project remains uncertain, with no decision yet made on the construction of the terminal expansion.
